TURKEY TAIL MUSHROOM POWDER BENEFITS & USES

WHAT IS TURKEY TAIL MUSHROOM POWDER?

Turkey Tail Mushrooms (Trametes Versicolor) have a disc-like shape and vary in colour. Their appearance resembles that of a turkey’s tail, hence their fun and memorable name!

This type of fungi grows on tree trunks and fallen trees in woodland areas across the world. It has been used as a health supplement for centuries, most commonly in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is prescribed as a treatment for respiratory conditions.

Today it is available as an extract powder, with an array of health benefits.

WHAT’S IN TURKEY TAIL MUSHROOMS?

Turkey Tail mushrooms are packed full of vitamins, minerals, 18 different amino acids and antioxidants, including phenols and flavonoids. The fruiting body also contains Polysaccharides and Beta Glucans, which enhance its medicinal quality.

Polysaccharides - Long complex chains of carbohydrate molecules made up of small sugar molecules. They stabilise blood pressure, support the cells and tissue, and have a positive effect on free radicals.

Beta Glucans - Sugars that are found within the cell walls of fungi. These are effective in reducing cholesterol levels and boosting the immune system, thus protecting your body from short and long term illnesses.

Polysaccharide-K (PSK) - A rare compound that displays powerful anti-tumour properties.

HISTORY OF TURKEY TAIL MUSHROOMS

Turkey Tail has a vast history as a medicinal mushroom. It was traditionally brewed as a soothing tea to increase energy, strengthen the lungs, support the stomach and spleen, and assist in the recovery from long-term diseases.

Turkey Tail mushrooms were mentioned in the first written text on medicinal herbs - Shennong Ben Cao Jing. It is also referenced in the Compendium of Materia Medica from the 15th Century in connection with healthy liver functions, strong bones and vitality.

In Asian cultures, the curving cloud of the Turkey Tail mushroom is a symbol for longevity, good health, spiritual attunement and infinity.

Turkey Tail is a powerful source of antioxidants, which help to combat free radicals and oxidative stress in the body. Turkey Tail mushrooms contain immune-boosting PSK and PSP. They enhance immunity by activating and inhibiting specific types of immune cells, while reducing inflammation.

Studies have demonstrated that Turkey Tail’s immune-boosting effects may help to fight cancerous tumours. A test tube study showed that PSK (a polysaccharopeptide found in Turkey Tail) prevented the growth and spread of human colon cancer cells. Additionally Coriolus Versicolor Glucan (CVG) another polysaccharide in Turkey Tail has also shown potential for suppressing tumours.

May enhance the success of cancer treatments

Turkey Tail mushrooms contain many beneficial compounds that may help to boost the effectiveness of cancer treatments, like chemotherapy. A study showed that people with breast, gastric and colorectal cancers experienced a 9% reduction in 5-year mortality, as a result of taking Turkey Tail, in addition to chemotherapy treatment.

Turkey Tail is packed full of important prebiotics, which help nourish good bacteria in the gut. An 8-week study found that consuming PSP extracted from Turkey Tail encouraged the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut and suppressed the growth of harmful bacteria like E. coli and Shigella.
