Oyster Mushrooms have been used in Asian countries for thousands of years, both for culinary and medicinal purposes. Similar in shape and colour to an oyster (hence the name), they are found on deciduous hardwood, as well as conifer trees all over the world.

A favourite with cultivators, it’s one of the easiest mushrooms to grow on a wide range of materials including dead wood, straw, grasses, cotton, coffee waste and paper products.

Today, they remain a well-loved culinary ingredient and are also available in powder form as a health supplement.

Oyster mushrooms are a great source of protein, vitamins (B1, B3, B5, B12, C and D), minerals, fibre and antioxidants like selenium, which strengthen the immune system and offer protection from chronic disease. Additionally, Oyster Mushrooms contain polysaccharides and beta glucans, which enhance its medicinal value.

Oyster mushrooms are low in calories, fat-free, cholesterol-free and very low in sodium, making them a healthy addition to your diet.

Polysaccharides - Long complex chains of carbohydrate molecules made up of small sugar molecules. They stabilise blood pressure, support the cells and tissue, and have a positive effect on free radicals.

Beta Glucans - Sugars that are found within the cell walls of fungi. These are effective in reducing cholesterol levels and boosting the immune system, thus protecting your body from short and long term illnesses.

Niacin- Oyster mushrooms are rich in Niacin, something almost every cell in the body needs to function and metabolise other nutrients.

Oyster mushrooms have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to drain moisture, replenish the spleen, strengthen blood vessels and expel parasites. It was first recorded in the Shennong Bencao Jing, with artificial cultivation dating all the way back to 199AD.

In Europe, the mushroom was first officially documented in 1775 by Dutch naturalist, Nikolaus Joseph Freiherr von Jacquin. It was named ‘Agaricus ostreatus’ which was later changed to Pleurotus ostreatus’ by German mycologist P. Kummer.

The Oyster mushroom was commercially cultivated in Germany, during World War I, as a subsistence measure during food shortages.

Cancer fighting properties

Oyster mushrooms may help to prevent the growth of colon and breast cancer cells, without significant effect on normal cells. Additionally, it may have a preventative effect on breast and colon cancer.

Modulate cholesterol levels

It is thought that the dietary fibre in oyster mushrooms helps to prevent triglyceride (a type of fat) from accumulating in the liver. High triglycerides can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and obesity-related disease.

Helps support the immune system

Oyster mushrooms contain beta glucans and other important compounds that act as immunomodulators. This means they help to regulate and support the immune system. One study found that taking an oyster mushroom extract for 8 weeks significantly enhanced immunity.

Helps to prevent obesity

Consuming fibre-rich oyster mushrooms can help you to maintain a healthy weight. One study found that regular consumption of medicinal mushrooms is effective in the treatment of metabolic syndrome, including obesity, provided it is combined with regular exercise.

Anti-inflammatory benefits

The beta glucans and antioxidants in Oyster mushrooms help to reduce inflammation. It’s also thought they contain a unique amino acid called Ergothioneine, which lowers systemic inflammation across the entire body.

Antibacterial properties

A study in the Journal of Agricultural Food and Chemistry showed that Oyster Mushrooms reduce bacterial levels in the body, due to the active compound ‘benzaldehyde.’ It is thought that the same compounds released by the mushroom to digest organic material for food, can also help combat infections in the human body.
