What is Cordyceps?

Cordyceps is known as the ‘caterpillar fungus’ in China. While other medicinal mushrooms grow on trees and logs in the wild, Cordyceps chooses to claim the bodies of caterpillars and other insect larvae in high mountainous regions to use them as a host.

We know what you’re thinking - that sounds pretty grim! But this type of medicinal mushroom has been used in traditional Tibetan, Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries. People would collect the remains of the insect, extract and dry the Cordyceps mushroom, before using it to treat a wide range of ailments from fatigue and sickness, to more severe conditions like kidney disease.

Cordyceps is also considered an adaptogen and immune supportive herb for managing stress response and strengthening the immune system.

Cordyceps Sinensis vs Cordyceps Militaris

There are 2 main types of Cordyceps mushrooms - Cordyceps Sinensis and Cordyceps Militaris. The ‘caterpillar fungus’ we have described above is Cordyceps Sinensis and, as you can probably imagine it is very expensive to source. Hence why, most natural mushroom powders are made from the Cordyceps Militaris fungus instead.

Cordyceps Militaris benefits are the same as Cordyceps Sinensis, however rather than growing on an insect, they are cultivated and grown on grain instead. This makes them much easier and far less expensive to source. So essentially, you get all of the same wonderful health benefits of Cordyceps but in a far less gruesome and costly way!

Mountainlife Cordyceps Militaris Mushroom Powder

Here at Mountainlife, we cultivate and grow Cordyceps Militaris mushrooms on gluten-free grain. Our mushroom powders feature 100% Cordyceps Militaris mushrooms, including the fruiting bodies, so you benefit from the polysaccharides and beta glucans (more on that later.) Unlike some cheaper wholesalers, we don’t add any fillers, binders or other nasties. Just 100% pure Cordyceps Militaris fungus.

In addition to our Cordyceps Militaris Mushroom Powder, we also offer a Cordyceps High Strength Extract Powder. This is made from the fruiting bodies of Cordyceps Militaris, which are dual extracted using alcohol and water - an Ancient Chinese method.

The temperature-controlled extraction allows us to produce a fine micro-powder, which is then tested to ensure it contains over 30% Polysaccharides, 10% beta glucans and a whole host of beneficial nutrients. Basically, the high strength Cordyceps Militaris benefits are even greater, as they have an even higher polysaccharide and beta glucan content.

Cordyceps Militaris Benefits

Cordyceps Militaris mushrooms are incredibly nutritious, containing:

  • Several types of essential amino acids includingglutamate, arginine, aspartic acid, tryptophan and tyrosine
  • Vitamins B1, B2, B12 and K
  • A wide range of minerals includingpotassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, manganese and zinc.

Additionally, the fruiting body of Cordyceps Militaris contains medicinal polysaccharides and beta glucans. Polysaccharides are long chains of complex carbohydrate molecules that store energy, send cellular information and support cells and tissue. Beta glucans are the sugars found within the cell walls of fungi. They are effective in reducing cholesterol and boosting the immune system.

With all of that goodness inside, it's no surprise there are many Cordyceps Militaris benefits and uses. Here are a few backed up by animal and lab-based scientific studies...

Cordyceps-Exercise-Performance

May boost exercise performance

Athlete’s often take Cordyceps Militaris for recovery and performance. Studies show that the fungus supports the body’s production of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), which delivers energy to the cells during physical activity. It is also believed to increase the body’s natural production of nitric oxide, which optimises the body’s use of oxygen and improves lung function.

Helps to support good heart health

In China, Cordyceps Militaris is an approved treatment for arrhythmia - a problem with the rate or rhythm of a heartbeat. Studies in animals have also suggested it has the potential to lower bad LDL cholesterol and could, therefore, help to lower the risk of heart disease.

May help to manage type 2 Diabetes

It is thought that Cordyceps Militaris has the ability to maintain healthy blood sugar levels by mimicking the action of insulin and could, therefore, help to control type 2 Diabetes. There is also some evidence to suggest that Cordyceps can help to prevent kidney disease - a known side effect of Diabetes.

Cordyceps and cancer

In recent years, there has been growing interest in Cordyceps as a cancer treatment. Many believe it has the potential to slow the growth of tumours and may also reverse the side effects of cancer therapy.

Anti-ageing potential

Traditionally, Cordyceps was taken by the elderly as a way to reduce fatigue, boost strength and even improve sex drive. Researchers believe that the antioxidants in Cordyceps Militaris have great anti-ageing potential. Antioxidants help to neutralise free radicals in the body, reducing the effects of ageing and risk of chronic disease.

Cordyceps-militaris-anti-inflammatory

Anti-inflammatory benefits

Inflammation is a natural response of the body, however, too much can cause a whole host of problems, including heart disease and cancer. Test tube research has shown that when human cells are exposed to Cordyceps Militaris, the proteins known to increase inflammation are suppressed.

Additionally, Cordyceps Militaris has shown to reduce inflammation in the airways of mice, leading researchers to believe it has potential as an asthma treatment.

Cordyceps Militaris and sexual health

In traditional medicine, Cordyceps is revered as a tonic for improving sex drive in both men and women. Taking Cordyceps Militaris may, therefore, help to stimulate DHEA, which enhances libido and improves sexual function.

As with all health supplements, it’s important to remember that benefits will vary from one person to the next, as we’re all different! The studies we’ve shared are predominantly animal and lab-based, so further human studies are required before any benefits can be relayed as 100% factual. However, we think the fact that medicinal mushrooms are so highly valued in traditional medicine and have been used for thousands of years, speaks volumes.

How to use Cordyceps Militaris

We believe the most beneficial Cordyceps Militaris dosage is ½ tsp (2g) daily. You’ll likely only start to notice Cordyceps Militaris benefits after taking the mushroom powder for at least 2 weeks.

Our mushroom powder can be stirred into hot (but not boiling) water to create a traditional tea or you can add it to your favourite superfood smoothies for an extra boost.

Cordyceps Militaris Buying Tips

When it comes to buying any medicinal mushroom supplements, you need to be savvy. Unfortunately, not all health supplements are created equally and some products on the market won’t offer any real benefits at all. With this in mind be sure to:

  • Buy from a trusted health supplement provider with credibility
  • Read reviews and testimonials from other customers
  • Check the source of the medicinal mushrooms
  • Read the ingredients list - are you certain what you’re buying is 100% pure mushrooms only?
  • Ask questions - if the seller can’t or won’t answer or their response just doesn’t sit right with you, take your business elsewhere!

Here at Mountainlife, we’re more than happy to answer any questions you have and help you decide on the best mushroom powder supplement to meet your needs. Simply drop us an email and we’ll chat.
